Lesson plan

  • 01 INTRODUCTION AND ORIGINS Edu talks about his origins, explains what his first steps were and the keys that led him to produce his first International success: “El Baile Alemán” (The German Dance). Staying true to your own style, working hard, and making good decisions are some of the topics Edu deals with while talking about how to define your own sound as a producer. To conclude, he talks about Fayer and Eklektisch, his two record labels, and how they achieved to include artists such as David August or Solomun, and organize international events.
  • 02 THE STUDIO: HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE Edu takes us to his studio and shows us all the hardware he uses: computer, card, monitors, synthesizers, headphones, controllers, etc. As well as software: his DAW and favorite plugins. He also talks about the set up with which he started producing at the age of seventeen and about what would change if he started again.
  • 03 LUCENT Edu opens the session of his tune “Lucent” and, track by track, talks about his thought process when producing it. To start, Edu creates background sounds using sequencers. He continues adding a pad with chord progression. This is followed by the creation of an original, ethnic and asynchronous groove. Finally, Edu explains how he manages to insert several basses at the same time, and how he makes all the elements work together in the same direction.
  • 04 BITTER FATE: ELECTRONIC MUSIC WITH ACOUSTIC ELEMENTS Edu considers “Bitter Fate”, one of his greatest hits, the culmination of an electronic sound with acoustic elements. Edu analyses the whole tune by opening his session and talking about all its components. He starts with the base and the hook and continues explaining the plugins and the treatment he uses on the vocal track, as well as how he plans the break to make it long and special, and ends by talking about how to close the tune giving intensity to the main chorus.
  • 05 THE ARRANGEMENT Edu talks about the importance of having a clear idea of how we imagine the tune and the difficulty that exists when transforming a good loop into a good arrangement. He then returns to “Lucent” to teach a practical case of arrangement. Edu details each section of the tune: when he introduces sounds, when he filters them and takes them out, and how he plays with the listener giving him/her new elements without making him/her miss the ones that are taken away.
  • 06 THE MIX In order to do the final mix, Edu exports all the audio tracks and creates a new session. As a practical example, he opens the mix session of “Lucent” and explains all the adjustments that were made in each track: levels, equalization, compression, and so on. Furthermore, he insists on the importance of testing the tune in a live performance and listening to it on different devices/ in different places to be able to make good decisions, as well as on always leaving room for mastering when mixing.
  • 07 REMIX Edu talks about the different types of remixes that he has faced and as a practical case, he opens the remix session of “Lips” from “The XX”. He explains the elements he has selected from the original version and how he has adapted them to the new tempo of the remix as well as how he has focused his remix on having a very powerful bass line. He also talks about its structure, the new sounds he has introduced, and analyzes the relationship between kick and bass in the low frequencies.
  • 08 CREATING A NEW TUNE Edu creates a loop for a new tune from scratch explaining every step he takes. He starts by creating a background and looking for the leading notes, using side chain and equalization to make room for the other elements. Then he works on the groove by recording drums and he adds new elements to the background. Edu finishes by recording and processing the bass line of the tune.
  • 09 PREPARING THE SESSION Edu talks about his setup as a DJ and what led him to choose that particular equipment. He continues by explaining how he organizes the music for the session: melodic and percussive tunes, time organization, etc. He also talks about what his setup was when he started DJing and advices DJs who are just starting now on what equipment to have at home.
  • 10 THE TECHNIQUE Edu explains how his technique when DJing is based on maintaining intensity during the session. To understand better, he details how he works with loops using the Auto Loop function, how he uses the filter, reverb and ping-pong delay, and end with a practical example of mixing using these elements.
  • 11 THE MIX Starting with an existing loop, Edu explains how he chooses the next tune and shows step by step how he procedes with the mix. He then talks about the use of Sync as well as the Beat Jump function. To conclude, he gives another practical example of mixing a percussive tune with a more melodic one using the previously learned concepts.
  • 12 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF A DJ Session psychology is what makes a great DJ. This is Edu’s philosophy consisting of handling intensity during the different parts of the session and in the different types of sessions. Edu focuses on tempo and tonality and how contrast can be the most effective element. Finally, he explains how to create uncertainty in the crowd to get the attention of the dance floor.
  • 13 MUSIC BUSINESS Edu talks about how to create your own identity and be unique in the industry. He insists on how easy it is nowadays to do marketing and neglect what is truly important: your music. He also talks about key issues in the industry: the relationship between artist and manager and when you should hire one, the role of agents, how to deal with tours, and how to establish your fee. Finally, he explains the importance of thinking like a DJ when producing and always being original.
  • 14 DJ SESSION Edu’s exclusive DJ Session, approximately one hour of duration, in which he allows us to see in detail each of his movements on the mixer and the turntables.

In this type of industry where the whole world is looking at what everyone else is doing and copying each other, it's really important to have your own identity.
